Rubber To Meet The Water

by Kyle Evans

Making their first ever appearance at the event, the club will be taking their talents to the shores of Bowen Front Beach to showcase some of the finest driving skills in the region.

Taking place at the Catalina Car Park, the 90 by 50sq m area will be transformed into a series of obstacle courses where drivers will pit themselves against each other, to compete for the quickest time.

Whitsunday Sporting Car Club secretary Karen Scott said it would be an equal display of speed and skill.

“It’s all about throttle control and getting through their course in a specific pattern, we will mark the course with cones and whoever gets through in the quickest time without getting off course will win,” she said.

The special event showcases up to 20 of the region’s finest drivers from all over the region, with participants consisting of hardened veterans as well as talented juniors.

Featuring an array of modified race cars, drivers will exhibit their skills in everything from Nissan Skyline’s to Toyota Supra’s.

Ms Scott said the course would put their skills to the test.

“It’s all memory based,” she said.

“They have to remember where they are going and what they do. They might be weaving in and out of the cones and then have to do a figure eight on the next one.

“It’s not about speed, it’s all about technique.

“We’ll keep changing the course and keep it challenging for them to remember.”

The event is shaping up to be the first meet of the year for the Whitsunday Sporting Car Club which has had to postpone the start of their season due to poor weather conditions. Ms Scott said this event would be extra special.

“We hold them every now and then throughout the year but this will be special for us because of the Superboats,” she said.

“We always have a few people that come down from Bowento watch us, so it’ll be great to be in Bowen.”
